Often unique to athletes and artists, performance anxiety is created when our psychological energy is misdirected away from our performance and into unproductive, debilitating thinking that undermines our mind-body connection.
Whether it is dancing, singing, giving a speech, winning a championship, or even just sex with someone who matters, what is required most is Presence.
Simply put, word-based ruminating thoughts create a layer of unnecessary interference between ourselves, our awareness, and our skills. And these are the sorts of thoughts I have successfully helped people with, mainly because my accident does not allow me engage in that sort of thinking, so I’m particularly aware of what the real alternative is.
In order to establish a graceful, powerful State of Flow, rather than stopping our thoughts, we must first develop our sense of presence by shifting our fundamental understanding regarding the nature of thought itself.
