Contexts for Love

I’ve written before about how the current series, Brave New World imagines a world where all our problems have been solved. In a politically correct dreamland, everyone does as they are told and no one insults anyone. The result of that is that no one has any strength or resilience, so any discomfort is dealt with by drugs.

Interestingly, many of the people who see me for anxiety etc. will already be on drugs to lower anxiety. So the drugs often aren’t good enough to solve the issue for many people, they’re just good enough for them to be able to go to work –much like on the series.

In the end, as the series noted in its most recent episode (#9 – Soma Red), that the ‘flaw’ that makes the pearl cannot be gotten rid of. It is a core part of what we are as humans. Without it there is no pearl in our reality.

As an example of this, in the New London of the series, a ‘feelies DJ‘ (who hosts parties where people experience nice emotions), notes that the pre-new world ‘savages’ (read: emotional people) created music, and art, wrought often from pain. And it’s true, we often forget that a lot of the world’s beauty is forged from pain.

Today’s generous actions of doctors and nurses only comes across as heroic because the conditions under the pandemic are so bad. An explosively beautiful autumn only happens because the leaves must die to change colour, just as a caterpillar must die to become a butterfly. Preciousness and temporariness are connected. Change is at the heart of everything.

In this case below, this woman sings a powerful rendition of an absolutely beautiful Chris Isaak song that is actually about a broken heart. And if we listen carefully, it’s the pain in the song that creates our connection with its writer and/or singer. Empathy is a form of love, but it only exists in the context of pain. This is an important lesson in how life is shaped.

The world was on fire and no one could save me but you
It’s strange what desire will make foolish people do
I never dreamed that I’d meet somebody like you
And I never dreamed that I’d lose somebody like you

No, I don’t want to fall in love (this girl is only gonna break your heart)
No, I don’t want to fall in love (this girl is only gonna break your heart)
With you, with you (this girl is only gonna break your heart)

What a wicked game to play to make me feel this way
What a wicked thing to do, to let me dream of you
What a wicked thing to say, you never felt this way
What a wicked thing to do, to make me dream of you

And I don’t wanna fall in love (this girl is only gonna break your heart)
No, I don’t wanna fall in love (this girl is only gonna break your heart)
With you

The world was on fire and no one could save me but you
It’s strange what desire will make foolish people do
I never dreamed that I’d love somebody like you
And I never dreamed that I’d lose somebody like you

No, I don’t wanna fall in love (this girl is only gonna break your heart)
No, I don’t wanna fall in love (this girl is only gonna break your heart)
With you (this girl is only gonna break your heart)
With you (this girl is only gonna break your heart)
No, I… (this girl is only gonna break your heart)
(This girl is only gonna break your heart)

Nobody loves no one

peace. s
